World Intellectual Property Day: Its Importance and Impact
Greetings and Blessings,
World Intellectual Property Day, observed on April 26 [since 2000], coincides with the date on which the Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) came into effect in 1970. This day provides an opportunity to recognize and “celebrate creativity, and the contribution made by creators and innovators to the development of economies and societies across the globe.”
Hereby: On World Intellectual Property Day, I hope that humanity can reach a point where they respect the intellectual property of their fellow beings and uphold this human right as an inalienable right of every human being.
What is intellectual property? Intellectual property refers to the legal rights that protect the creations of the mind and human inventions. In today’s world, in which the knowledge-based economy is the mainstay, this concept has become one of the most important assets for individuals and professions.
It should be noted that intellectual property has been in limited circulation since the 15th century but has gained legal and regulatory status internationally since the late 19th century. Such attention given to intellectual property has led to the naming of World Intellectual Property Day and the adoption of domestic laws, which clearly demonstrate the international community’s consideration of “intellectual property,” the emphasis on which should revive an important aspect of human rights.
