Nowruz Greeting 1405: In Solidarity with the Oppressed

In the Name of God

Greetings and Blessings,

I hereby extend my congratulations on the arrival of Nowruz and the Solar Hijri year 1405 to all Iranians and to all nations that observe this ancient celebration.

We begin this new solar year at a time when a great number of our dear civilian compatriots have lost their lives. In expressing my profound regret, I offer my deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families. I share in their sorrow and hold a fervent hope for the swift termination of this war—before more innocent women, children, and civilians are sacrificed, and before the nation’s entire infrastructure is laid to waste. (The restoration of such infrastructure, even if funds were readily available, would require at least a decade, during which the people would be forced to endure a lack of essential welfare, medical, educational, and economic facilities—a scenario from which dire outcomes can be envisioned.) Therefore, this year is to be called the “Year of Solidarity with the Oppressed.” We must direct our attention more than ever toward the Iranian nation and the defence of its rights, in the hope that the predicted humanitarian catastrophe does not befall this long-suffering people. This is especially critical as the general economy may face such a widespread collapse that it severely threatens the daily livelihoods of the populace. Such a state, if accompanied by mass unemployment and devastating poverty, could take decades to rectify and return to an optimal condition. Furthermore, the continuation of a protracted war of exhaustion is not unexpected, and the assumptions held by some—that this conflict would last only a few days—have proven entirely false.

Additionally, we stand beside all families whose loved ones are held in prison, particularly the many dear companions of the “Erfan Keyhani Halgheh” community and the “Taheri Peace Organization” who have, unfortunately, been widely arrested in recent months and are currently imprisoned, while others remain on bail, awaiting their summons to prison. Our entire being is with them at every moment, and I hope for the swift return of all these prisoners to the warmth of their families. I take this opportunity to call for the freedom of all political prisoners and prisoners of conscience.

Furthermore, I congratulate all seekers of spirituality and truth on the arrival of Eid al-Fitr, the celebration marking the opening of heaven’s gates—to those who still believe in the world of spiritual knowledge and recognize that all human suffering stems from a lack of such wisdom (bi-ma’rifati). This void is seen both in those who betray humanity through oppression, and in those who, through their own unawareness, permit political slavery to be imposed by power-mongers, despots, and the like. It is also seen in those who, for fleeting gains, use various deceptions to enthrall others, gathering political slaves and servile sycophants around them in the hope of sharing spoils and attaining rank—unaware that a great defeat awaits them (without a doubt).

With the hope that by elevating the level of awareness among the Iranian people, a powerful democratic vision will prevail, whereby—shielded from the chaos of civil war—a standard of living worthy of all citizens may finally be realized; where people may enjoy their national wealth with justice, and the hands of those with sinister designs upon that wealth are cut off. (Iran is the fifth wealthiest country in the world despite comprising only 1% of the global population; yet, the existence of lifelong regimes has historically barred the people from this bounty, leaving them subject to the political machinations and power-plays of authoritarians.)

I also seize this moment to honor the anniversary of the Nationalization of the Iranian Oil Industry, achieved by the late Dr. Mohammad Mossadegh. His was a struggle marked by sacrifice from which others reaped the rewards, even as they mocked and maligned him after ruining his life. Meanwhile, using the oil wealth he reclaimed for Iran, they provided luxuries and extravagance for themselves and their masters, plundering and squandering the national wealth.
